Nakuru-Hämeenlinna Co-operation
See photos and read news from Nakuru. Hämeenlinna is the UNICEF 2012 City.
Nakuru-Hämeenlinna cooperation is a partnership between the Municipal Council of Nakuru (hence MCN) in Kenya and City of Hämeenlinna in Finland.
The project works under the umbrella of North-South Local and Regional Authorities’ Co-operation Programme coordinated by the Finnish Association of Local and Regional Authorities (AFLRA) and financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland.
General objectives are capacity building of local authority, to develop the standards and practices of local administration, to improve the services provided by local authorities and to raise awareness on the issues of democracy and equality in public decision making. Good governance, sustainable development and gender mainstreaming are over cutting themes in activities. Cooperation is now on its third phase (2011-2013).
Cooperation is working through 2 components: education and environment. Cooperation is largely implemented through colleague-to-colleague work. Work visits, trainings, sensitization and awareness rising are important. Components are aiming at increasing capacity of local authority. More specifically environment component is aiming to clean and green Nakuru and Hämeenlinna. Education component is aiming to improve quality of primary school education and special education, enhance environmental protection and awareness.
In 2010 Civic leaders’ activity was started. Civic leaders are given more active role in co-operation activities as they plan and implement their own activity. Two Councillors from MCN and HML are named to be responsible of reporting the activities.
The respective departments of partners will be responsible for implementation.
