Changes to emptying intervals for septic and cesspool tanks
The waste management regulations for the Jätelautakunta Kolmenkierto area have been updated. Changes have been made to the maximum permitted emptying intervals for septic and cesspool tanks.
Sludge tanks at permanent residential properties must still be emptied at least once a year. For leisure properties, the emptying interval has changed. In the future, the sludge tank of a leisure home can be emptied at least every three years, whereas previously the tank had to be emptied at least once a year.
– Even though the waste management regulations allow for a longer emptying interval for leisure homes, the resident must ensure that the wastewater system functions properly, reminds Waste Management Manager Martta Kantele.
A longer permitted emptying interval does not mean that it is always advisable to empty the tank less frequently. Septic tanks, in particular, should be emptied often enough to ensure the wastewater system operates as designed.
If the sludge tank is not emptied regularly, a thick and hardened layer can form on its surface. This can disrupt the normal flow of water in the tank and cause problems with the wastewater system’s operation. The waste management authority also highlights the importance of regular emptying in a published video on the subject.
Ordering an emptying service
If a residential property is not connected to the sewer network, wastewater is typically discharged into a septic or cesspool tank. In the Jätelautakunta Kolmenkierto area, residents order the sludge tank emptying themselves from a transport company of their choice. The sludge is transported to a wastewater treatment plant for processing. Watch the video for tips.
