Sustainable Hämeenlinna
Hämeenlinna is a home town for sustainable living. Economic, ecological, and social and cultural sustainability are the city’s cornerstones and prerequisites for achieving the goals of the city strategy.

Sustainable lifestyle
A sustainable future is built through the efforts of the entire city.
The city’s residents play an important role in sustainability and climate action. Children and young people who learn about sustainability at Comprehensive School are able to create a more sustainable future for themselves and also teach sustainability skills to their parents.
The links below will take you to compiled tips for increasing sustainability in your daily life and to a learning path for sustainable living, which aims to educate and guide children and young people toward a sustainable and responsible lifestyle.
Climate program
The key program for ecological sustainability is Carbon Neutral Hämeenlinna, which aims to reduce the city’s per capita consumption-based emissions by 80% by 2035 compared to 2010 and achieve carbon neutrality so that the remaining emissions are sequestered in carbon sinks or offset by other means. The program will be updated in 2026.
Biodiversity
The second key program for ecological sustainability is the biodiversity program, or LUMO program, which aims to increase biodiversity and halt biodiversity loss in the Hämeenlinna city area in 2026–2036.
Environmental monitoring
The municipal Environmental Protection authority is responsible for monitoring the state of the environment and for related surveys and research.
