Environmental protection

We are responsible for environmental protection permits, supervision, and promotion. Our goal is to ensure a healthy and pleasant environment that is ecologically sustainable and biodiverse.

Environmental supervision handles the enforcement of laws, regulations, provisions, and decisions under the environmental protection authority. Hämeenlinna’s environmental supervision also carries out the municipal environmental protection authority’s duties in the municipality of Hattula under a service agreement. The environmental protection supervision plan for the City of Hämeenlinna and the Municipality of Hattula has been updated for 2026–2029.

Explore the supervision plan below.

We monitor air quality, water quality, and groundwater quality in our supervision area. Detailed information and results can be found on the Sustainable Hämeenlinna page.

The state environmental permit authority is the Finnish Supervisory Authority (FSA). FSA processes and decides environmental permit matters concerning projects with significant environmental impacts or projects extending across multiple municipalities, and supervises facilities whose operations have significant environmental impacts.

Report environmental damage

You can use the contact form to report an environmental damage you have observed.

Please do not include confidential information in the form, such as information about your health. Please note that the form becomes a public document as soon as it is received by environmental supervision (Act on the Openness of Government Activities, Section 7, Subsection 1).

Report environmental incidents requiring immediate action, such as oil and chemical spills, to the emergency services to the emergency number 112. The rescue services are responsible for initial response and preventing further damage.

You can also contact us by email via the registry office: kaupunkirakenne@hameenlinna.fi.
