Water bodies are an important part of the nature and environment of Hämeenlinna and Hattula. In Hämeenlinna, the lake surface area is approximately 12%, and in Hattula approximately 16% of the municipality’s total area. The water bodies of Hämeenlinna and Hattula belong primarily to the Kokemäenjoki River basin, which drains into the Gulf of Bothnia.

The status of water bodies is monitored and water bodies are restored in cooperation with the City of Hämeenlinna, the Municipality of Hattula, Vanajavesi Centre, the Finnish Supervisory Agency, lake protection associations, water area cooperatives, and other stakeholders. Some environmental permits include surface or groundwater monitoring obligations.

Aquatic plant mowing and dredging

Aquatic plant mowing and dredging must always be carefully planned to ensure that restoration objectives are achieved as effectively as possible and to avoid potential environmental harm or neighbour disputes. The disposal of mowing or dredging waste must also be considered in the planning.

Mechanical mowing or dredging requires notifying to the Finnish Supervisory Agency at least 30 days before commencing the operation. Filing the notice is free. Mechanical mowing and dredging also always require permission from the water area owner. Dredging exceeding 500 m3 requires a permit under the Water Act from the Finnish Supervisory Agency.
