A clean environment is our shared resource – up-to-date information supports a sustainable Hämeenlinna
Environmental monitoring programme and reports
The jurisdiction of the Hämeenlinna Environmental Protection Authority includes the City of Hämeenlinna and the Municipality of Hattula. Regarding environmental monitoring, a monitoring programme is prepared annually for the upcoming year, and a monitoring report is prepared for the previous year.
The state of the environment is also monitored as part of the Green City Accord (GCA) launched by the European Commission, which the City of Hämeenlinna joined in 2021. European cities that have signed the GCA commit to promoting and monitoring five sustainable development goals, which are:
a significant improvement in air quality as soon as possible, based on WHO guidelines and EU air quality standards,
a significant improvement in water quality in various water bodies (e.g., lakes, streams, rivers, coastal waters) and sustainable water use,
the protection and improvement of urban biodiversity, including the quantity and quality of green areas in the city and halting the decline of urban ecosystems as well as their restoration,
the development of the circular economy and waste management by significantly improving household waste management, reducing waste generation and landfill disposal, and increasing the reuse, repair, and recycling of products, and
the reduction of noise pollution to levels recommended by the WHO.
In 2023, Hämeenlinna reported the baseline data for sustainability indicators to the European Commission and set targets for each indicator. The action plan was completed in 2024. Interim reporting on the work to the European Commission will take place in 2026, and the targets are intended to be achieved by 2030.
