City Board to decide on starting the design phase for the ice rink renovation

The Hämeenlinna City Board will decide at its meeting on Monday, 5 October 2026, whether the City of Hämeenlinna and Hämeenlinnan Jäähalli Oy will launch more detailed project and investment planning for the renovation of the ice rinks. Hämeenlinnan Jäähalli Oy is a subsidiary of Liikuntahallit Oy.

If the City Board so decides, Hämeenlinnan Jäähalli Oy will initiate more detailed project and investment planning and preparation for the renovation in the next phase.

The planning will determine the actual scope and costs of the project.

The new planning phase will examine the ice rink’s repair needs and the need for functional updates in more detail. At the same time, the scope, phasing, and schedule of the project implementation will be defined, and a more detailed cost estimate will be prepared.

The goal is to distinguish between renovation measures essential for the continuity of operations and any updates related to the development of activities and business operations.

Once the planning is complete, Hämeenlinnan Jäähalli Oy will present a more detailed proposal to the city’s decision-making bodies regarding the project’s content, implementation options, schedule, and total costs, along with other reports necessary for making the investment decision.

First repairs in spring 2028 at the earliest

The decision to start planning does not yet determine the final scope of the renovation or the total investment. For decision-making purposes, sufficiently accurate information is first required regarding the renovation needs, different implementation options, and their costs.

The implementation of the first phases of the repairs could begin in spring 2028 at the earliest. The final schedule will be specified during the planning and subsequent decision-making process.

“Hämeenlinna has invested significantly in sports and exercise facilities in recent years, and now it is time to focus on the ice rink, the renovation of which is essential. This is also a key site for the community and for elite sports conditions in the city. Our goal is for Hämeenlinna to remain a significant hockey city in the future. The renovation of the rink should be promoted without delay.”

Olli-Poika Parviainen, Mayor, City of Hämeenlinna

Comment from Hämeenlinnan Jäähalli Oy

“The ice rinks are in very active use and are an important part of Hämeenlinna’s diverse sports culture. It is now important to carefully investigate what is required to ensure the continuity of operations and which part of the future investments constitutes essential renovation and which part is potential development of activities. In the project planning, the scheduling of repairs and future solutions also play a significant role. The renovation can also impact energy efficiency and economic viability.”
