Award-winning! Smart Work 2026: Making Literature Visible at School
The Smart Work page presents everyday innovations and success stories developed by the employees of the City of Hämeenlinna.
Every semester, the Hämeenlinna Library provides a collection of books on loan to Seminaari Comprehensive School, which pupils can read during reading breaks. The books are placed in our school library, which also houses the school’s own collection. The school library’s operations have been managed by one responsible teacher. The duties have included receiving and returning library books and providing instructions for reading breaks.
This school year, I took on the role of the teacher responsible for the school library. I wanted to develop the library’s role in inspiring reading and bringing literature to the forefront of daily school life. The school library now has a specific theme for each month of the school year, which is showcased through attractive displays and presentations of related books, information flashes, small library tasks, and announcements over the central radio. Classes can reserve the library space for their own lessons. The last break of the week is a quiet games break. I have received positive feedback from colleagues regarding the development of the school library’s activities, as well as a lot of positive energy for my daily work as a class teacher.
The goal is still to hold book talks for all grade levels in the school library and to develop the pupils’ involvement as promoters of literacy and literature.
