Smart Work 2026: Making stories from Häme accessible to everyone through cooperation with the third sector
The Smart Work page presents everyday innovations and success stories developed by the employees of the City of Hämeenlinna.
In August 2025, the Hämeenlinna City Museum, in collaboration with the third-sector operator Hämeenlinna Society, released a publication titled Hidasta. This unprecedented collaboration resulted in a publication that reaches all residents of Kanta-Häme as both an e-publication and a print magazine. The goal is also to publish a significant portion of the magazine as an audio version.
The idea originated at the Hämeenlinna City Museum and was then presented to the Hämeenlinna Society. At the time of publication, neither organization had a communication or publishing channel like the Hidasta magazine. Both shared the goal of making the history of Häme, as well as the region’s stories and modern life, accessible in a new way. The enthusiasm of the Hämeenlinna City Museum and the Hämeenlinna Society led to the concept of a publication featuring a wide variety of texts on different topics. The work progressed with passion, through collaborative brainstorming, collecting stories, and inviting various stakeholders to participate.
At the Hämeenlinna City Museum, the project was led by Museum Curator Henna Välimäki, who managed the production process, organized the various stages of the project, handled scheduling and supervision, and developed and implemented the distribution plan for the museum. Välimäki coordinated the cooperation between the different areas of the publication.
The magazine was produced using a multi-channel approach: it is currently available as both a print and an e-magazine. This allows it to reach both readers who love print and those who prefer digital formats. The goal is also to provide parts of the magazine as audio recordings. Cooperation with the third sector brought diverse perspectives to the content and strengthened the sense of community. Authors from various backgrounds contributed stories, ensuring that everyone can find something of interest.
The result is a publication that deepens the understanding of the Häme identity and increases local pride. The project streamlined workflows through joint planning and division of labor, which also strengthened the sense of belonging. The preparation of the magazine was carried out in close cooperation with third-sector operators, increasing the project’s impact and social significance.
Work continues with the planning of future editions of the magazine and the production of audio versions for the first issue. Discussions are already underway regarding the production of a second issue through the same inspiring collaboration.
