Smart Work 2026: Supporting neurodivergent children in the classroom

The Smart Work page presents everyday innovations and success stories developed by the employees of the City of Hämeenlinna.

As part of my NEPSY coach training, I created a PowerPoint presentation intended for all teachers and school assistants. My goal was to articulate as concisely as possible what should be taken into account when there is a neurodivergent child in the classroom.

The City of Hämeenlinna has an excellent school NEPSY folder of over 150 pages, but my goal was to condense the information into a presentation that highlights the main points, making the information quickly accessible in a short format. Further information is available for those who wish to read more.

I managed to condense the main points into eight slides, which can be printed and displayed on a classroom or staff room wall if desired. The PowerPoint presentation is also easy to share electronically with anyone interested.

The slides for “When you have a neurodivergent child in your classroom” are titled:

  • Structure, predictability, and routines
  • Consider the senses
  • Communication and interaction
  • Supporting learning
  • Emotions, behavior, and self-regulation
  • Cooperation
  • Remember
  • Materials and links
