Smart Work 2027: A Communal Rest Period
The Smart Work page presents everyday innovations and success stories developed by the employees of the City of Hämeenlinna.
The idea originated when children often engaged in the same activities during rest periods, and the environment became stressful for both children and adults. We wanted to modify the environment to be more engaging and functional based on our experiences.
We have developed an operational model for a daily, house-wide communal rest period. Diverse activities are organised for the children who are awake, either outdoors or indoors, through shared responsibility. Children can choose from different activities and spaces according to their own wishes.

The activities are planned and organised so that every employee knows their responsibilities and tasks during the rest period. This model allows teachers planning time and teams meeting time during rest periods. Areas of responsibility are clearly documented, allowing everyone to check their assigned play area.
The operational model has clarified activities and reduced the workload of the staff. The initiative has strengthened children’s participation as well as the sense of community and belonging among all children and adults at the centre. The model has proven to be effective. Everyday life is easier and everyone has fun. Activities are modified as needed.
