Smart Work 2027: A Gamified Practical Test as Part of Home Economics Assessment
The Smart Work page presents everyday innovations and success stories developed by the employees of the City of Hämeenlinna.
The initial impetus for this development came from training that included integrating gamification into teaching. We wanted to create a practical test that motivates pupils, where the test is a game in which you progress from one level to the next by accumulating points.
We have created a gamified practical test where food preparation is transformed into a game. Level one is a written identification task; once passed, you can proceed to prepare the food. The time spent on the written work reduces the time available for cooking.

Through this development work, a different type of competence assessment has been achieved, where the evaluator also learns while completing the structured assessment form. The gamified practical test motivates and enables fair and easy-to-implement peer assessment.
We develop and modify the forms after each practical test period to ensure they are as clear and unambiguous as possible and measure what we consider to be the most essential aspects. We are also considering new dishes where pupils can demonstrate their skills.
