Smart Work 2027: Digitalizing the Public Transport Liiku! Ticket
The Smart Work page showcases everyday innovations and success stories developed by the City of Hämeenlinna employees.
The Liiku! ticket used for children’s group travel on public transport used to be a paper A4 form. The shortcomings of this form from a public transport perspective led us to develop an e-form for ordering Liiku! tickets, and at the same time, the ticketing system provider Waltti introduced a QR code-based travel ticket for group travel on public transport. Together, these two developments resulted in the electronic Liiku! ticket for children’s groups travelling on public transport in Hämeenlinna.
The paper form has been completely discontinued, and all necessary travel information about groups is now collected through the e-form. Previously, several different versions of the paper form were in circulation, the forms were often incompletely filled in, and drivers did not have time to register all boardings of group passengers. Background development of the QR code has been ongoing in cooperation with the ticketing provider Waltti, and public transport currently uses the information from the e-form to order a QR code for the travelling group’s use.
As a result of this change, we now have a real-time overview of Liiku! ticket users as well as accurate boarding figures for group travel in the public transport data. The form is easy to manage, for example regarding travel destinations, since it is now an electronic version. It is easy for the adult accompanying the group to show the ticket’s QR code from their phone to the reader on the bus, which no longer creates extra work for the driver. In addition, the environment is spared, as unnecessary printing of forms has been eliminated.
Development of the Liiku! ticket in Hämeenlinna’s public transport is ongoing, currently mostly behind the scenes. A particular wish expressed to the ticketing system provider is that customers, such as daycare centres, could order the Liiku! ticket directly through the system provider’s application.
