Smart Work 2027: Invasive Species Bag

The Smart Work page presents everyday innovations and success stories developed by the employees of the City of Hämeenlinna.

The idea originated from a few officials who wanted to increase resident participation in invasive species control. The concept was further developed and put into practice by a working group focused on invasive species within the infrastructure department. Initially, the working group considered which types of bags would work best in practice and how to ensure smooth emptying of the bags. At the same time, they designed the appearance of the bags and the instructions for collecting invasive species.

The locations for the invasive species bags were determined based on sightings, taking into account frequently used routes to allow as many residents as possible to participate in the control efforts.

The problem with invasive species has grown in recent years, necessitating the consideration and development of new control methods. Additionally, the goal is to involve residents in caring for our shared environment.

During the summer of 2026, a total of 20 invasive species bags were placed in the field. Some bags were emptied several times during the summer, while others collected less plant waste. The invasive species bags have assisted in control efforts while simultaneously increasing awareness of invasive species.

The plan is to continue placing invasive species bags in the field during future summer seasons. After the first summer, we gained valuable information regarding the placement of the bags, and we will continue to develop the service to better meet the needs and wishes of the residents.
