Smart Work 2027: Launching the reuse of sanding sand

The Smart Work page showcases everyday innovations and success stories developed by the City of Hämeenlinna’s employees.

We noticed a news report about the problem of sanding sand being classified as waste, which prevents its reuse as such in construction and maintenance work. We surveyed the environmental permits granted in Finland for the reuse of sanding sand. We looked into what methods are used elsewhere and whether these methods are cost-effective or cost-neutral compared to the purchase price of new sanding gravel.

A suitable location for the operation was found at a depot used by the infrastructure unit, and an environmental permit was applied for. The permit was granted in spring, and the site was built in summer 2026. The aggregate recycling operation will begin after the coming winter.

Recycling aggregate reduces the use of natural resources, as it decreases the need to quarry rock for crushing into gravel. Rock is a non-renewable resource. Recycling gravel is either cost-neutral or more affordable than purchasing new gravel.

In spring 2027, the first batches of gravel will be taken out of storage for recycling. The gravel is dried in a pile and screened to remove excess material. Sampling is also carried out to ensure the gravel contains no harmful substances, such as oil. The screened gravel will be reused for sanding in the coming winters. During the autumn, a test batch of previously collected gravel will also be screened.
