Our school is located in Ruununmylly, on the eastern side of the city. Approximately 300 pupils study at our school in grades 1–6, and there are about 30 adults working here. In our large school grounds, different grades have their own buildings: Vanaja, Kruunu, Runskila, and Mylly.

Our vision is a Well-functioning school – we learn, act, and grow together.

Values important to us include equality and a sense of community, participation and responsibility, creativity and courage, as well as a sustainable lifestyle.

The school’s mission is to provide pupils with versatile basic education. We carry out educational and well-being work in cooperation with all homes.

We encourage pupils to travel their school commute by walking or cycling.

School rules and regulations

Every school must have rules and regulations. The preparation and updating of these rules follow the guidelines provided by the Finnish National Agency for Education.

Ruununmylly Comprehensive School rules and regulations

Purpose, monitoring, and revision of the rules and regulations

To fulfil its educational and instructional mission, the school requires rules and regulations. They are essential for the peaceful flow of daily work and for the comfort and safety of the members of the school community.

These rules and regulations have been prepared together with the entire school staff, pupils, and parents/guardians. The entire school staff and pupils commit to following these rules and promoting a safe and pleasant school day together. The rules and regulations can be viewed on the school’s website and in the action and development plan. The rules are reviewed with pupils annually, and parents/guardians are informed about them. The rules and regulations are checked regularly.

Definition of school area and school hours

The school area is considered to include the school buildings and their yard areas. School hours consist of the working day according to the school timetable, as well as events and trips related to schooling.

Different situations in daily work

School commute

Good manners and traffic rules must be followed during the school commute. The school encourages pupils to travel their school commute independently by walking or cycling. It is recommended to wear a bicycle helmet when cycling to school. Bicycle helmets must be used on the school’s own cycling trips. Bicycles are stored in the bicycle park. During the school day, riding bicycles or other vehicles in the school yard area is prohibited.

Any drop-off traffic is directed to the parking areas of the Kruunu and Runskila buildings. Taxi traffic is directed to the parking area of the Kruunu building.

Lessons

Pupils must arrive for lessons punctually according to the agreed schedule, with the necessary tools and equipment, and with assignments completed. Pupils may not leave the school grounds during the school day without a teacher’s permission.

Breaks

Breaks are spent outdoors in the school yard area, following the instructions and rules given for break times. The break area has been reviewed with the pupils at the start of the school year, and a map of the break area has also been updated for every teacher and is displayed in every teaching space. Separate rules have been drawn up for breaks.

School indoor spaces

Movement inside the school must be calm, without running or pushing others. Classrooms, storage areas, and school corridors are kept clean and in good order.

Ruununmylly Comprehensive School is a shoe-free school: outdoor shoes are not worn inside the school buildings. The use of indoor shoes is recommended inside the school.

School menus

Behaviour during school meals must be restrained, and good table manners must be observed. Mealtimes have been drawn up for all classes at the beginning of the school year. The class adult(s) supervise the pupils’ dining. Transitions to meals are conducted in an organised manner and with caution.

Sports facilities

Pupils go to the sports hall changing rooms under the teacher’s guidance after the break has ended. After PE lessons, pupils wash up according to the instructions given by the teacher.

Clothing

Pupils should dress for school in a manner that is appropriate for schoolwork and takes health aspects into account. Pupils must arrive for PE lessons dressed suitably for each specific lesson.

Washing facilities

Toilets, washbasins, and showers are used only when necessary and in an appropriate manner.

Property

School property must be kept in good condition and must not be damaged. In the event of damage, it must be reported immediately to a teacher or another school adult. There is a liability for compensation for intentional damage. Everyone must ensure that the school grounds and buildings remain clean and pleasant. Bringing money, valuables, and items unrelated to studies, such as toys, to school is at the pupil’s own responsibility. The school is not responsible for lost property. Bringing tobacco products, intoxicants, and dangerous objects into the school area is prohibited.

Pupils’ own phones and other mobile devices

Phones must be put in backpacks before entering the school grounds. The phone is kept in the backpack throughout the school day. During lessons, there may be situations where a pupil is allowed to use a phone with the teacher’s permission. After the school day has ended, the phone may only be taken out once the pupil has left the school yard area. Smartwatches must be set to silent mode for the duration of the school day. A smartwatch may be worn on the wrist during the school day if it is in silent mode.

A phone or other mobile device may be used with the teacher’s permission if the pupil has an urgent need to contact a parent/guardian during the school day, for example, due to illness. A pupil always has the right to call the emergency number in an emergency without permission from school staff.

Consideration for others

In class, the focus is on studying, and others must be given the peace to work. Pupils should behave in a friendly and helpful manner towards their classmates. No one may be bullied, and a teacher must be informed if any pupil is seen being bullied. Behaviour towards adults working at the school and visitors to the school must be polite and respectful.

Our school is a KiVa School, which follows a programme of measures to prevent and tackle bullying. We inform pupils, parents/guardians, and staff about the principles and operating methods of the KiVa School programme and the school’s own supplementary operating model.

Absences

A pupil must participate in basic education unless they have been temporarily granted an exemption for a specific reason (Basic Education Act, Section 35). Authorised absences approved by the school include illnesses as well as requested and granted leaves of absence.

There must always be a justified reason for absence from school. The parent/guardian and the pupil themselves must take care of school assignments and subjects studied during the absence, and agree on completing tests with all the pupil’s teachers. It is the parent/guardian’s duty to ensure the pupil’s studies during the absence. Holiday trips should primarily be taken during school holiday periods.

Ruununmylly Comprehensive School follows the City of Hämeenlinna’s common model regarding the prevention, monitoring, and intervention of absences.

Consequences for breaching the rules and regulations

Plan for the use of educational discussions and disciplinary measures in the City of Hämeenlinna’s basic education:

  • we operate in accordance with this plan

  2. I ask an adult for help if necessary.
  3. Bullying is prohibited.
  4. I spend the break in the designated break area.
  5. I keep my phone in my backpack throughout the school day.
  6. I follow the specific pitch rotations and the instructions for the ice hill, play equipment, and swings.
  7. Play-fighting does not belong in break times.
  8. I leave living trees and bushes alone.

The morning club is organised as the school’s own activity. Activities are organised on school days, Mon–Fri, from 7:00 to 9:15. The morning club space is in the ‘tori’ (central area) of the Runskila building. Our school’s school assistants act as instructors.

Pilke organizes the afternoon club activities. Activities are organised on school days, Mon–Fri, from 12:00 to 17:00. The afternoon club space is in the Vanaja building.

A parents’ association operates at our school, and all parents/guardians who have children at our school can participate in its activities.

The association’s annual meetings are open to parents/guardians. The association acts as a maintainer and developer of home-school cooperation.
