Dive into history at Linnaniemi

Linnanniemi offers sights and experiences for the whole family

Did you know that the story of the City of Hämeenlinna began at Linnanniemi in 1639? Around the medieval Häme Castle, on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi, a unique park-like area has grown up, located just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre. Charming walking paths follow the beautiful shores of Lake Vanajavesi, and from Linnanniemi you can continue on to the City Park and along the railway bridge all the way to Aulanko. The magnificent Linnanpuisto park serves as the most beautiful summer stage for numerous festivals and events!

Experience three fascinating destinations with one combined ticket!

Häme Castle on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi in summer.

Häme Castle

Take a glimpse into the Middle Ages and discover the glory and decline of the best-preserved stone castle in the Nordic countries! The best way to explore the more than 700-year-old Häme Castle is on a guided tour included in the admission fee, offered in both Finnish and English. In December, the castle hosts the traditional St. Thomas’s Market.

Prison Museum, Vankila

The Linnanniemi area is also home to Finland’s largest prison museum. Vankila, which served as Hämeenlinna’s provincial prison until 1993, tells the history of imprisonment and prison life. The exhibition presents spaces, cells, and objects that speak a harsh language about everyday prison life and raise fundamental questions about humanity. Vankila is open to the public during the summer season, from May to the end of September.
