Culture is an important part of the well-being, inclusion, and sense of community of the residents of Hämeenlinna. It strengthens the city’s identity, increases attractiveness and vitality, and offers opportunities to learn, participate, experience, and create something new.
Hämeenlinna is known for its diverse range of culture and events, which are built by cultural institutions, art and culture professionals, associations, communities, and active residents.
In Hämeenlinna, culture is developed in cooperation with various actors. The goal is for culture to be accessible, diverse, and a visible part of the residents’ everyday lives throughout the entire city area.
Objectives guiding the development of culture
One of the objectives in the Hämeenlinna City Strategy is to be a renewing city of culture. The implementation of this objective is guided by the Culture Roadmap 2022–2030, which brings together the objectives, measures, and indicators for the development of culture until 2030. The implementation of the roadmap is monitored using defined objectives and indicators.
The objective of the roadmap is to strengthen the significance of culture as part of the residents’ well-being, the city’s identity, and vitality. The development of culture is guided by three main objectives:
Residents of Hämeenlinna create the city of culture
Every resident of Hämeenlinna is a part of culture as an experiencer or a creator. The goal is for everyone to have the opportunity to participate in culture and contribute to the city of culture. Culture must be accessible to all, and the operating conditions for cultural creators must be secured.
Culture builds the identity of Hämeenlinna
The distinctiveness of Hämeenlinna arises from diversity: history and the present day, the inner city and the surrounding districts, the cultural landscape, cultural institutions, and a wide range of urban culture. The goal is to strengthen the significance of culture in the construction of Hämeenlinna’s identity.
Culture strengthens vitality
Culture, art, and events increase the city’s attractiveness and appeal from the perspective of residents, tourists, and businesses. In the development of culture, cooperation between different actors is strengthened, and the operating opportunities for creative sectors are supported. The goal is to strengthen vitality through culture.
