A day trip to the flax and sahti parish of Lammi is filled with nature and cultural experiences.
Lammi has been known as a flax parish since the beginning of the modern era, and in the 18th century flax was Häme’s most important export product. The annual Flax Market is packed with activities from start to finish and attracts over ten thousand visitors to Lammi village. The event traces its roots back to the 1860s, when the Lammi village market drew even larger crowds than the Hämeenlinna market.

In the garden of Porkkala Manor, time stands still and the intoxicating rose garden opens a gateway to another world. The main building is surrounded by nearly four hectares of English-style manor park and parkland forest, which every home gardener and flower enthusiast must experience at least once in their lifetime. The manor’s crowning glories are the over 90-year-old giant agaves, which in 2015 received the status of historic garden signature plant.
It is also worth taking time to admire the vast selection at the Manor Garden Shop.
In summer, guided tours and theme days are organized at Porkkala Manor, during which visitors are also served by a small café.
In addition to flax, Lammi is famous for its sahti, and the sahti-making tradition remains strong in the parish. Finland’s oldest microbrewery, Lammin Sahti, located in the village of Liesi in Lammi, has been awarded both domestically for Finland’s best beer (2018) and internationally. You can taste Lammin Sahti at the Tuulonen Shopping Centre brewery shop.
Explore the flax and sahti tradition at the local heritage museum in Lammi village, located in a brick warehouse built in 1888, which specializes in presenting the flax and sahti tradition.
The Civil War left indelible marks on many areas of Kanta-Häme – including Lammi. One of the best-known events is likely the “Mommila skirmish,” in which patron and Finland’s richest man Alfred Kordelin lost his life in a clash between Russian soldiers and the Lahti Civil Guard. Alfred Kordelin’s carriage collection, including the “murder carriage,” can be seen at the Lammi local heritage museum. Numerous memorials in the Tuulos, Hauho, and Lammi areas serve as reminders of events from a hundred years ago.
In the centre of Lammi village, in a nationally valuable cultural environment, stands the impressive medieval grey stone church, which is estimated to have been completed in the 1510s.
