What the Hämpton?

During the summer, the #HÄMPTON letters that move around different parts of the city are also available for events and organisations to borrow.

No one seems to know with complete certainty from where the word Hämpton originates, but many versions of the story circulate in the city. The older generation recalls Hämpton being used occasionally as a nickname for Hämeenlinna since the 1970s, while others believe the term was popularized in the 1990s by the rapper Paleface, who has roots in Hämeenlinna, and his circle of friends through the phrase ”Straight outta Hämpton”, which refers to the song Straight Outta Compton by the legendary gangsta rap group N.W.A.

Whatever the story, Hämpton leaves no one indifferent. The word generates both great enthusiasm and a bit of annoyance, as well as abundant discussion on various platforms. What is certain is that Hämeenlinna residents have embraced the nickname as their own, and although it contains a hint of self-irony, Hämpton is often spoken of with strong civic pride.

Hämpton belongs to all Hämeenlinna residents: it represents a beloved hometown that does not live only in its history. Hämpton is an expression of a vibrant city where things happen and which brings its residents together. A city that residents themselves shape in their own image – in small or large ways, but always authentically and with feeling.

Cultural influencers, poets and music come to mind. It’s a relatively small but dynamic city from which many great figures have emerged.

#Hämpton letters

The marketing team of Hämeenlinna came up with the idea of having movable #HÄMPTON letters made as a social media photo spot for the Wanaja Festival of summer 2018. The idea took off and the first selfies and group photos by the letters immediately appeared on Instagram. The following summer they were moved to thr Kantola Event Park to celebrate Metallica’s concert. During the pandemic, the illuminated letters brought joy and comfort to city residents wandering the market square of Hämeenlinna.

Since then, in addition to numerous events, the letters have lounged both on the shores of Lake Vanajavesi and at the city’s finest scenic locations, and have even made an appearance in the forests of the Evo Hiking Area.
