Groups, camps, and fees

At Aimokoulu, art and crafts are part of your journey for years. You can join at any stage. The most important thing is the enthusiasm to do, learn, and create something new.

Aimokoulu offers children and young people the opportunity to study visual arts and crafts over the long term, according to their own interests. Studies progress in stages over the years, but you can join at any stage without prior experience.

The teaching follows the extended syllabus of basic education in the arts. In practice, this means a goal-oriented and inspiring learning path where creativity, the joy of doing, and the development of one’s own skills go hand in hand. At its best, the hobby can continue from early childhood until young adulthood.

Description of the structure of basic education in the arts studies.
Aimokoulu groups are available for children and young people of all ages.

Early childhood art education offers both visual arts and crafts content in all groups.

In early childhood art education, children are introduced to visual arts and crafts through play, exploration, and experimentation.

In the introductory groups, children can explore subjects that interest them through art. They paint, draw, build, and sculpt, as well as observe, wonder, and use their imagination.

The groups experiment with different materials, tools, and techniques in visual arts, media art, and crafts. At the same time, they practice manual skills and hand-eye coordination.

The most important things are curiosity, the joy of discovery, and positive experiences of doing. In the introductory groups, children work without their own adult. An exception is Intro 1 shape play, where a familiar adult is present.

In Aimokoulu’s basic groups, 7–10-year-olds study the basic skills of visual arts or crafts for four years. The studies involve practicing creative work, finding one’s own expression, and long-term practice.

Visual Arts

In the visual arts basic groups, the pupil learns to express their thoughts and observations through images. The work introduces, for example, colours, shapes, lines, light, perspective, and figure drawing.

In the groups, pupils draw, paint, photograph, sculpt, build, and make films. Brainstorming, sketching, and experimenting with different tools and techniques are an important part of the studies.

Crafts

In the crafts basic groups, the pupil becomes familiar with different materials and learns basic craft skills. The work involves experimenting with a wide range of techniques, such as sewing, felting, ceramics, weaving, knitting, and construction.

In the studies, pupils design and create their own crafts and artworks. At the same time, they practice observation, ideation, problem-solving, and the development of their own expression through working with their hands.

The extended workshops are a two-year study module for 11–12-year-olds. The work involves practicing long-term commitment and implementing larger projects. The teaching is provided by professionals from various fields of art.

Versatile study helps the pupil find their own interests and prepare for later elective workshops.

Visual Arts

In the extended visual arts workshops, longer projects are carried out in addition to basic tasks. The work can combine, for example, painting, sculpture, media art, and film.

The group examines images, media, and the environment from different perspectives. The pupil is encouraged to find their own way of making art, experiencing it, and interpreting what they see.

Crafts

In the extended crafts workshops, pupils experiment with different materials, techniques, and design methods. The pupil develops their own ideas, deepens their craft skills, and learns to work both independently and together with others.

The work involves practicing perseverance, planning and evaluating one’s own work, and taking responsibility for one’s own learning process. Interaction and cooperation skills are also strengthened in joint projects.

The elective workshops are intended for pupils aged 13–15. The pupil chooses a workshop that interests them, where they can immerse themselves in their chosen field of art and develop their own expression over the long term. The workshop can be changed annually.

More detailed descriptions of the workshops can be found in the Eepos registration form. There are many groups available for visual arts, crafts, and media art.

In the visual arts workshops, you can focus on, for example, ceramics, sculpture, drawing, painting, or media art.

In the crafts workshops, you can study, for example, fashion design, product design, as well as jewellery and make-up design.

Advanced studies are intended for visual arts and crafts students over the age of 16. Working in workshops and the open studio is more independent than before. The student deepens their expertise in line with their own goals, interests, and ways of expression.

During the studies, a final project is completed on a self-selected topic. The final project includes an artistic work, documentation of the work process, and a written reflection on one’s own process and learning.

The pupil can choose a suitable workshop from Aimokoulu’s wide range of workshops. More detailed descriptions of the workshops can be found in the Eepos registration form.

Other groups

In addition, Aimokoulu organises colour workshop groups for babies and toddlers, as well as shape play groups for preschool-aged children with their own adult.

In the colour workshop, the baby explores colours, lights, materials, and different surfaces together with a familiar adult. The activity is based on the use of the senses, shared experience, and exploration.

In the colour workshops, you can look, feel, smell, experiment, and create. The dyes used are natural, vegan, and safe for small children. They feature cheerful colours, interesting scents, and many kinds of textures.

Lights, shadows, and different materials also provide things to explore. At the same time, the child and adult get to enjoy doing things together and meet other babies and families.

The most important things are unhurried exploration, shared experiences, and the joy of doing.

In the shape play workshop, the child is introduced to art together with a familiar adult. In the group, they wonder, experiment, and create in a safe and encouraging atmosphere.

The work involves practicing basic art-making skills, such as painting, drawing, sculpting, cutting, and gluing. At the same time, the child becomes familiar with different materials, tools, and ways of expressing themselves.

The group offers the child a safe place to practice their own expression and working together with the support of an adult. Their own work brings joy, insights, and experiences of success.
