Built environment supervision

The aim of supervising the built environment is to ensure that buildings and grounds are kept tidy and that items are not stored in a way that poses a danger to the environment or disfigures it. According to the Building Act, a building and its surroundings must be maintained in such a condition that it meets health and safety requirements and does not cause harm to the environment. A building and its surroundings must be kept in a constantly tidy condition.

Building Supervision monitors the condition of buildings and grounds from the perspective of the public interest

The condition of plots and buildings is monitored based on the building inspectors’ own observations as well as requests for action received from residents.

Residents can submit a request for action to Building Supervision regarding the supervision of a building or grounds. Based on the request, it is considered whether the matter requires measures from Building Supervision. Matters are handled in order of urgency.

A request for action is submitted using a specific form and becomes a public document immediately upon its arrival at Building Supervision.

Building Supervision does not process anonymous reports or requests for action.

Building Supervision only monitors the condition of buildings and grounds. Feedback regarding the maintenance of public areas can be submitted to the Urban Environment branch electronically via the electronic feedback system or by telephone to the Urban Environment customer service on weekdays from 9.00–11.00 and 12.00–15.00, Tel. 03 621 2310.
