Activities at Ahvenisto
Located in the beautiful ridge landscapes of Hämeenlinna, Ahvenisto offers experiences and activities for people of all ages, all year round.
Take a dip in Lake Ahvenistonjärvi
A magnificent sandy beach with jetties, the refreshing, clear water of the spring-fed Lake Ahvenistonjärvi, and the majestic forest landscapes surrounding the lake – what more could one wish for from a beach?
Plenty! At Ahvenisto, beach-goers are served by a café, three beach volleyball courts and a campfire hut. The youngest family members will enjoy the fenced playground near the beach, crowned by a pirate ship with a climbing mast!
Lake Ahvenistonjärvi is a protected kettle lake, so fishing is not permitted in its area.
Enjoy the outdoor swimming pool
Next to the beach, you’ll find the Ahvenisto Outdoor Swimming Pool, restored to its Olympic-era glory and chosen as the national sports facility of the year in 2017. The pool features a water obstacle course, and for the daring, diving platforms from 1 to 10 metres.

Appara Lakeside Sauna
Appara Lakeside Sauna is heated from Wednesday to Sunday. Sauna slots can be booked separately, or you can join the public slot open to everyone. Slots are reserved in advance via a separate booking calendar, from which you will receive a code for the sauna’s electric lock and the downstairs changing rooms.
The lakeside sauna’s jetty is shared by sauna users and ice swimmers. Single and seasonal ice swimming tickets can be conveniently purchased from the the city online or at the Hämeenlinna City Service Point. Tickets include access to the heated changing room, but not the sauna.

Enjoy the nature
The ridge landscapes of Ahvenisto feature outdoor and running trails from the Olympic era. The area has an approximately 5-kilometre cross-country running trail, following the original Olympic route, and an approximately 6-kilometre nature trail marked with yellow triangles.
Along the ridge-top path of Ahvenistonharju, you can also hike to the Hirvilampi area or via Nuppola to Hattelmalanharju. Those with a hiking spirit can join the over 250 km long Hämeen Ilvesreitti hiking trail from Ahvenisto.
Ski in the ridge landscapes
During snowy periods, the city maintains cross-country ski tracks at Ahvenisto. Connecting tracks link the area to Tervaniemi, Hirsimäki, and the Ahvenisto Racetrack. Check the up-to-date status of the tracks on the ski track map.
The illuminated tracks located at the Ahvenisto Racetrack are usually the first to be ready for skiing in winter, thanks to snowmaking. The racetrack is open to skiers from 9 AM to 10 PM, but on weekdays, track machines are often at work during the day. On weekends, ski competitions are also organised in the area, during which the tracks are closed to other skiers. Follow the competition calendar on the website of Hämeenlinnan Hiihtoseura ry.
