The City of Hämeenlinna curriculum is based on the national core curriculum.

In Hämeenlinna, the first foreign language (A1 language) for all pupils is English, the study of which begins in the first grade.

For the optional A2 language starting in the fourth grade, the pupil may choose from the languages included in their school’s language path. The language choice is binding and study continues until the end of grade 9. It is possible to continue A2 language study in upper secondary school.

B1 Swedish begins as a common language for all pupils in the sixth grade.

It is possible to choose a B2 language for grades 8–9 of lower secondary school. The choice is made in the spring of the seventh grade and it is binding. It is possible to continue B2 language study in upper secondary school.
