Guidance counselling

The purpose of guidance counselling is to support pupils in making decisions based on their own abilities, values, backgrounds, and interests.

Pupils’ study decisions are made with their daily lives, studies, further education, and future in mind. Through guidance counselling, pupils learn to recognise their own opportunities and to influence the planning and decision-making of their own lives.

Pupils are encouraged to consider and question their preconceptions about education and professions, and to make choices free from gender-bound role models.

Guidance counselling includes:

  • Classroom sessions
  • Small group guidance
  • Individual guidance and pupil welfare work
  • Intensified guidance counselling in grades 8 and 9

In lower secondary school, the primary responsibility for guidance counselling lies with the guidance counsellor. Additionally, guidance counselling includes guiding and monitoring pupils’ application obligations before the end of basic education.

In addition to prevention, the role of guidance counselling is to particularly support pupils who:

  • have difficulties with their studies
  • are at risk of exclusion from education or working life

This work involves multidisciplinary collaboration. The aim is to ensure the continuation of studies, for example, by:

  • supporting pupils who are at risk of being left out of education
  • through intensified individual guidance counselling

The guidance and monitoring responsibility of guidance counselling is implemented according to the ‘Supported Transition’ principle. This means that during a pupil’s transition to a new study environment or a new form of education, care is taken to ensure that the young person is not left alone and that their compulsory education is properly fulfilled.

The City of Hämeenlinna’s municipal guidance counselling plan is included in its entirety as an appendix to the local curriculum (in Finnish).
