Pupil welfare

All schools within the City of Hämeenlinna have a communal, multidisciplinary pupil welfare team that meets regularly.

If parents are concerned about their child’s schooling (learning, behaviour, peer relationships, bullying, low mood, absences, etc.), they should first contact the child’s teacher or form teacher.

Children or young people can also directly contact pupil welfare staff.

The school nurses and doctors, school social workers, and school psychologists within pupil welfare are employees of OmaHäme (Wellbeing Services County of Kanta-Häme).

School health services include:

  • Health check-ups and appointments
  • Vaccinations
  • First aid for school accidents and serious illnesses during the school day
  • Health, sexual health, and contraception counselling
  • Support for coping and mental well-being
  • Reconciling chronic illness and schooling

A school nurse conducts a health check-up for each pupil every year. More extensive health check-ups are carried out in grades 1, 5, and 8. During these extensive check-ups, the nurse and doctor assess the well-being of the pupil and their entire family, which is why guardians are invited to attend.

The treatment of illnesses is not part of school health services. In cases of illness such as colds, foot pain, or stomach problems, you should primarily contact your local health centre.

Pupils can attend the school nurse’s reception without an appointment during school-specific reception hours. More information on school health services and school-specific reception hours:

Social workers support and assist pupils with their schooling and social development by discussing, providing advice, and guiding them to various support measures. Social workers collaborate with pupils, families, school staff, and authorities.

Social worker services promote the well-being and cooperation of the school and student community with pupils’ families and other close relations, and support pupils’ learning, well-being, and social and psychological capabilities.

A pupil can contact a social worker if they have concerns weighing on their mind or wish to talk to an adult. A guardian can contact a social worker if they are worried about their child or the family’s situation. More information on social worker services and school-specific phone numbers:

Psychologists provide expert assistance with issues related to learning, growth and development, psychological well-being, and challenging life situations.
