A Builder's Story from Hämeenlinna
The Savijoki Couple
When the Savijoki couple decided to swap their large detached house for a more practical home, they knew one thing for certain: Hämeenlinna would still feel like the right place to live. They found their new home in an area where nature, services, and functional everyday life converge.

We wanted a home that would also work for the future
The Savijoki couple have lived in Hämeenlinna since the 1980s. Their careers, family, and the daily life built over decades have tied them to the city, and moving elsewhere never felt like an option.
“We have lived in Hämeenlinna for a long time and spent our entire working lives here. Now our children also live here, so it still felt like exactly where we want to be in the future.”
The idea of a new building project arose from a change in their life situation. Their large detached house no longer met the needs of the coming years.
“We no longer needed a large house; instead, we wanted a functional and appropriately sized home for the years ahead.”

The plot was found in a place where everyday life functions well
Planning their new home began with searching for a suitable plot. For the Savijoki couple, the most important thing was not the largest possible plot or an impressive house, but a functional overall package.
“The location was certainly the most important reason. We wanted a plot where the cardinal directions felt right and where everyday life would be as smooth as possible.”
Alilaurila is located approximately five kilometres from the centre of Hämeenlinna. The area offers peaceful living close to nature, yet city centre services are still nearby. This combination also convinced the Savijoki couple.
“It’s a short distance to the city centre from here, but at the same time, all essential services are close by. The central hospital, health centre, schools, day care centers, and shops are all easily accessible.”
The ease of everyday life is also reflected in how they get around.
“We are the kind of people who walk and cycle a lot. Even the city centre doesn’t feel far away.”
Construction went more easily than expected
Construction often seems to be a long and complicated process. However, the Savijoki couple’s experience was positive.
“Dealing with the city went really well.”
The couple participated in a plot presentation organised by the city, where they could explore the area and plots in more detail.
“Once we knew what size house and plot would suit us, the decision was made quickly.”
According to them, the building permit process also progressed smoothly.
“The permit process handler gave us advance notice of the schedules, so we avoided delays.”
Building regulations have become more detailed over the years, but with the right partners, the overall project remained manageable.
“The house factory and the supervising foreman helped a lot. If there’s one thing worth investing in, it’s a good supervising foreman.”

The home was designed for the years to come
Above all, they wanted their new home to be functional. The couple opted for a single-storey house that better meets their current and future needs.
“The idea is that this will be our home for the rest of our lives.”
Practicality was also considered in the garden design.
“I’ve always enjoyed gardening, but now we wanted a garden that wouldn’t be too strenuous to maintain. There’s room for everything necessary, but the workload remains reasonable.”
They are particularly pleased with the layout of their new home.
“The kitchen and living room form a spacious whole, even though there are fewer square metres than in our previous home.”
Ultimately, everyday life is what matters most
Building is always a big decision, and a project is never completed without moments when one reflects on their choices.
“After moving in, during the first few nights, I wondered what on earth I had done, because building is such a big project after all.”
However, any doubts quickly faded.
“Now it feels like this has become exactly the home we envisioned.”
When asked what is ultimately most important about their new home, the Savijoki couple’s answer is simple.
“The most important thing was to create a home where we feel good now and in the years to come.”

The Savijoki couple’s story shows that building can still feel possible in the right place. In Hämeenlinna, many builders find exactly what they are looking for in a new home – a functional everyday life, proximity to nature, and space to live life on their own terms.
