Exemption from wastewater treatment requirements

Properties located in shore or groundwater areas may, under certain conditions, apply to the municipal environmental protection authority for an exemption from wastewater treatment requirements.

Upon application, the municipal environmental protection authority may grant an exemption from the wastewater treatment requirements stipulated in the Environmental Protection Act and the environmental protection regulations of the City of Hämeenlinna and the Municipality of Hattula.

An exemption can be applied for by properties located outside the sewer network in groundwater or shore areas (maximum 100 meters from a water body).

  • the environmental load is significantly low, or
  • meeting the treatment requirements would require unreasonable measures from the property holder

When assessing unreasonableness, the following are taken into account:

  • the property’s possibility to connect to the sewer network
  • the advanced age of permanent residents and other similar special factors related to their life situation
  • long-term unemployment, illness, or other social impediment to performance affecting the property holder

An exemption is granted for a maximum of five years at a time. The permit expires if the circumstances that formed the basis for granting it change significantly. A fee in accordance with the tariff will be charged for processing the application.
