Become a volunteer

Would you like to give your time and help others? As a volunteer at Pysäkki, you can be an outdoor companion or a digital assistant for an elderly person, or assist them with their everyday tasks.

At Pysäkki, you can volunteer regularly or perform occasional tasks that suit you, according to your own wishes and life situation.

Read more about our volunteer tasks and contact us (in Finnish) or sign up for the next Introduction to Volunteering orientation.

Volunteer orientations

Come and hear about volunteering opportunities at Pysäkki! Orientation sessions for new volunteers are an easy way to get involved.

Participating in the orientation does not commit you to anything; you can simply come and hear about the activities in a relaxed environment. We are happy to help you find the volunteer task that is just right for you!

The Introduction to Volunteering orientation, aimed at everyone interested in volunteering, is an easy way to join Pysäkki’s activities. The orientations are organized in cooperation with the Hämeen Setlementti organization. The orientation covers topics such as:

  • What is volunteering?
  • What are the principles and values of volunteering?
  • What volunteer tasks are available at Pysäkki?
  • What volunteer tasks are available at Hämeen Setlementti?

In autumn 2026, orientations will be held as follows:

  • Tuesday 20 October, 17:00–19:00, at Pysäkki’s facilities in Kumppanuustalo (Kirjastokatu 1)
  • Wednesday 25 November, 17:00–19:00, at the Hämeen Setlementti’s facilities in Keskustalo (Palokunnankatu 16)
  • Further information and registration:

In the Volunteering at Pysäkki training sessions, you will receive more detailed information about volunteer tasks at Pysäkki and the practices and rules associated with them.

You can participate in this training after the Introduction to Volunteering orientation. If you are already familiar with volunteering, you can participate directly in the Volunteering at Pysäkki training.

Volunteering at Pysäkki trainings in autumn 2026:

  • Tuesday 3 November, 16:30–18:30, Kumppanuustalo
  • Further information and registration:

In addition to the aforementioned orientations, we offer our volunteers additional training on various themes, such as encountering people with memory disorders and encouraging and supporting physical activity. There is also specific training for those volunteering with a dog.

Volunteer tasks at Pysäkki

At Pysäkki, you can volunteer in a variety of roles. Most volunteer tasks involve assisting elderly people living at home. Additionally, you can act as an event assistant at various occasions according to the assignments we receive.

As a PysäkkiJelppari, you provide one-off help in everyday situations: You can act as an escort for doctor’s visits or shopping trips. You can also help with small household chores, such as changing a light bulb, changing a bicycle tire or doing yard work.

As a PysäkkiJelppari, you can also act as an event assistant at various functions and help with tasks such as carrying chairs, distributing programs and guiding participants.

As a PysäkkiKaveri, you visit the same elderly person for conversation or outdoor activities as agreed, for example, once a week or every other week. The elderly person may need a little reassurance for moving outdoors or simply someone to talk to. We also take your wishes as a volunteer into account; for example, you can choose to act only as an outdoor companion, work on specific weekdays or within walking distance of your home.

If you have a calm dog that enjoys being around people, you can act as outdoor companions together.

As a PysäkkiLuuri volunteer, you call the same elderly person as agreed, for example, once a week. During the calls, you can discuss current topics or shared interests. You can act as a conversation companion either by telephone or via video calls.

As a DigiJelppari, you guide and assist in the use of digital devices. You can act as a DigiJelppari at Pysäkki’s open DigiJelppi service at Kumppanuustalo or visit those in need of guidance at their homes.

DigiJelppi service

  • Time: Mondays, 15:00–16:30
  • Location: Kumppanuustalo, Group Room 101 (address: Kirjastokatu 1)

As a PysäkkiLiikuttaja, you act as a companion for an elderly person at the beginning of a new hobby 1–3 times, at mutually agreed times. You do not need to be a sports professional; it is enough that you are an enthusiastic hobbyist who wants to share the joy of movement with a friend.

As a PysäkkiLiikuttaja, you can also act as a leader for a group walk open to everyone or as a peer instructor for chair exercise sessions.

Principles of volunteering

  • You can act as a volunteer regardless of your age, place of residence, gender or other characteristics.
  • You can participate in volunteering in a way that suits your own life situation, according to your own abilities, schedules and resources.
  • As a volunteer, you act with the knowledge and skills of an ordinary person; the activity does not require specific professional training.
  • Volunteering is unpaid.
  • You can choose for yourself which cause you wish to support as a volunteer. As a Pysäkki volunteer, you work to promote the well-being of the elderly.
  • Volunteering is based on confidentiality and equality.
  • You will receive orientation before your volunteer task as well as the support you need during your assignment.
