Help and support with everyday life

You can ask a Pysäkki volunteer, for example, to go outside together or provide small everyday assistance for yourself or an elderly loved one.

Pysäkki volunteers primarily assist elderly people living at home. Together with our volunteers, we want to provide meaningful encounters and pleasant everyday life for the elderly.

Request a Pysäkki volunteer for assistance

Pysäkki’s activities are based on volunteering. The principles of the activities include:

  • Volunteers act as encouragers and supporters, and provide assistance with small everyday tasks.
  • A Pysäkki volunteer does not replace support and assistance provided by professionals, such as a personal assistant.
  • Participation in activities is at one’s own responsibility. The volunteer is not responsible for any injury that may occur to the participant (e.g., slipping, falling).
  • Volunteers act confidentially and are bound by confidentiality and secrecy obligations.
  • Volunteers participate in the activities because they want to help. They do not accept money or other compensation in return for their help.

You can request one-time PysäkkiJelppari assistance with everyday tasks. Assistance can include, for example, changing a light bulb, doing yard work, going to the doctor or store or running other errands. A volunteer can also accompany you on an introductory visit to, for example, Pysäkki’s group activities.

Please make your request at least a week before the desired time of assistance. This allows us time to find a suitable volunteer for the task.

You can request a volunteer to be a regular conversation and outdoor companion. These activities are intended to increase the well-being and safety of elderly people living at home. The volunteer does not replace professional help, but acts as, for example, a conversation or game companion.

The volunteer can meet the elderly person at their home or exchange news by phone or video call. Meetings or PysäkkiLuuri phone calls take place according to a mutually agreed schedule, typically once a week or every other week.

Please note that there is a queue for requests and finding a suitable volunteer may take time—please wait patiently for us to contact you. We cannot accept a request if the elderly person already has a volunteer friend through another organization.

A swimming centre and gym buddy acts as a companion for an elderly person at the beginning of their hobby 1–3 times at mutually agreed times. The volunteer is not a fitness professional, but an enthusiastic hobbyist who wants to share the joy of exercise with an elderly person.

Swimming centre and gym buddies currently operate at Hämeenlinna swimming centre and gym, as well as at Renko gym.

Additional information and requests:

A culture and library buddy accompanies you to enjoy cultural experiences or helps with, for example, library services. A one-time culture and library buddy can be requested as a companion for various cultural outings, such as visiting museums, movies, the theater and the library.
