Demolition permit / Demolition notice

A demolition permit application must always be submitted before a building is demolished. Depending on the local planning situation, the building supervision authority will process the application as either a demolition permit or a demolition notice.

Depending on the situation, the demolition of a building always requires either a demolition permit or a demolition notice. The applicant must always submit a demolition permit application in the Lupapiste e-service, which the authority will then process as either a demolition permit application or a demolition notice, as appropriate. A demolition notice is processed within 30 days of submission. Demolition work may only begin once the demolition notice has been processed or the demolition permit has been granted and is legally valid.

The application is processed as a demolition permit application:

  • within a detailed plan area
  • in an area where a building ban is in effect for the preparation of a detailed land use plan
  • if so stipulated in the general plan

The application is processed as a demolition notice:

if a valid building permit requires the demolition of the building

in the case of the demolition of an outbuilding or other comparable minor building, unless the building is considered historically significant or architecturally valuable, or part of such an ensemble.
