Fall in Love in Hämeenlinna

Hämeenlinna offers an evocative atmosphere and date spots where sparks can easily turn into a flame of love. We have compiled the most romantic date destinations in Hämeenlinna!

Sensual Aulanko

Hämeenlinna’s — and indeed all of Finland’s — most romantic spot is without question the Aulanko park forest, whose soulful national landscapes are said to have inspired Sibelius himself to compose Finlandia. Couples strolling hand in hand along the shore of Joutsenlampi, and newlyweds glowing with fresh happiness by the Ruusulaakso pavilion, are a familiar sight to visitors of Aulanko.

The atmosphere is crowned by a granite lookout tower rising phallically into the sky, which the immensely wealthy arms manufacturer and businessman Hugo Standertskjöld had built — along with all of Aulanko — out of lovesick devotion to a stunningly beautiful Polish countess. Yet this peculiar romantic was left quite literally alone on the shore, strumming his tune, for the countess never agreed to come to Finland.

Do you know the old trees, and the steep cliffs. Take my hand, and look at their lines. And look into my eyes, have you ever seen the like, the murky ponds of the forest.

Häme Castle and Linnanpuisto

The atmospheric Häme Castle is both an unrivalled dating spot and a majestic setting for unforgettable wedding celebrations, held year-round in the historic Linnantupa hall. The summer weekend festivals in Linnanpuisto park, from the Wanaja Festival to the Häme Medieval Festival, have undoubtedly served as the backdrop for many a love story, big or small — whether it lasted a lifetime or just one night.

The more than 700-year-old stone walls of Häme Castle have witnessed the greatest love stories of the centuries — and the bitterest heartbreaks. In the castle’s corridors, one may encounter the ghost of Synnöve, who, according to legend, was locked away in the dungeon by her brother, Birger Jaarl, for loving beneath her station.

Listen closely, and you may still hear Synnöve’s lament echoing through the vaults.

Kaupunginpuisto (City Park)

In Kaupunginpuisto, known as the home park of the legendary Ämyrock festival held since 1974, there have surely been more first kisses exchanged than anywhere else in Hämeenlinna!

The mystical stone ruins and delicate lace-like pavilions of Kaupunginpuisto practically invite those yearning for romance to pack a picnic basket and a blanket, and invite their sweetheart for an unforgettable date amid the lush park scenery. It’s also said that many have knelt before their chosen one on the stone steps of the park’s gazebo, which opens onto views of the castle and Lake Vanajanselkä.

Klerckerin Park

From the highest point of Klerckerin Park, the views stretch across Lake Vanajavesi all the way to the castle on the opposite shore. On the rocks sits a bench where first dates have been shared, champagne bottles popped in celebration of years spent together, and — as the wildest local stories whisper — the most physical expression of love has also been known to take place.
