4 Tips for Spending a Winter Day in Hämeenlinna

Hämeenlinna is a true paradise for winter holidaymakers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering everything from skiing to kick-sledding. We’ve gathered the best outdoor tips!

1. Alajärvi’s Sled Park Is Hämeenlinna’s “Hidden Secret”

Imagine a crisp, sunny, frosty day and a snow-covered lake landscape stretching as far as the eye can see. The scent of smoke drifting from a campfire hut. At Alajärvi in Hämeenlinna, just about five kilometers from the city centre, skiers, tour skaters, kick-sledders, and dog walkers all enjoy winter days together in perfect harmony, each on their own route.

The most memorable winter outing is crowned by a hundred volunteer-restored kick-sledges available for public use, along with a merry-go-round sled whose spirited spins bring joy to kids and grown-ups alike! On weekends, hot food and drinks are sometimes sold in the area, but it’s a good idea to bring your own snacks as well. Along the ice route, you’ll find a campfire hut at the nearby Tervaniemi outdoor recreation area as well as at Kotsaari.

The Alajärvi sled park is located at Välläntie 165, Hämeenlinna.

2. Be Enchanted by the Aulanko Scenery

How does a ski trip through a Finnish national landscape sound — one known to have inspired Sibelius himself in his compositions? In Aulanko, Hämeenlinna, there’s an easy 10 km loop through beautiful forest scenery, as well as a more demanding, illuminated 6.4 km track with steep climbs and descents. It’s worth packing your own snacks here too, since you’ll find a campfire hut and fire pits along the outdoor trail that circles Lake Aulanko. After a day on the tracks, a hot drink at the Aulanko Outdoor Lodge café hits the spot.

3. Skiing and Ice Swimming at Ahvenisto

In winter, Ahvenisto’s motor racing track transforms into a ski centre, with a 3 km illuminated loop groomed with machine-made snow. There are also plenty of ski trails throughout the Ahvenisto ridge landscape. Explore Hämeenlinna’s full ski trail map.

Could there be a more perfect combination than the gentle heat of a lakeside sauna, a refreshing dip in the clear waters of Lake Ahvenisto, and the beautiful ridge scenery surrounding it! Book a spot at Appara Lakeside Sauna for a shared session, or reserve a private sauna slot for a larger group.

Take a Dip in the Ice Hole

Ice swimming, a popular winter activity, is available in Hämeenlinna at Ahvenisto, as well as at Aulanko and the Tervaniemi beach in Alajärvi. In the surrounding municipalities, you can take a dip at Lake Äimäjärvi in Iittala and at Porrinahde in Hauho.

4. Waterfront Route Through Medieval Scenery

A favorite route among outdoor enthusiasts is the approximately six-kilometer waterfront route that winds through the stunning scenery of Lake Vanajavesi, Hämeenlinna’s city centre, and the medieval Häme Castle — a route also praised as “Finland’s most beautiful running route”! Along the way, you’ll also find duckboards and a campfire spot. Stop for some sledding fun in the City Park or on the castle ramparts!
