When planning a move, take care of matters in good time.

If you are looking for a new apartment and receive benefits from Kela (such as social assistance or housing allowance), verify that the rent is not too high according to Kela’s regulations. If the rent is too high, Kela will not pay the security deposit for the apartment. If you pay the deposit yourself, Kela will also not pay additional housing allowance for the rent in the future. You must pay the excess rent yourself every month.

Mover’s checklist – how to make moving easy

If you live in a rental apartment, notify the property manager/landlord of your move.

Submit a notification to both the old and the new housing company.

Submit a notice of removal to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency

You may do this at the earliest one month before the move and at the latest one week after the move. The notification can be submitted online or on paper.

Notify your new address to the places from which you receive mail

Most organizations and companies receive your new address directly from the population register. However, you are responsible for ensuring that invoices are delivered to the correct address.

If you have children, arrange a new early childhood education or school place for them if necessary

Inform the children’s school and daycare center of the move as soon as it is confirmed and terminate the old place if necessary.

Transfer your internet connection, electricity contract, and home insurance to the new address or conclude new contracts

It is advisable to compare the prices of different service providers to find the most affordable option. You can conclude the contracts yourself online or call the service providers.

If you move into a detached house, also conclude other necessary contracts

For example, water and waste management contracts.

Arrange for any moving assistance in good time

Clean the old apartment thoroughly

Also empty any storage spaces and the garage.

Return all keys to the property manager or other agreed person in good time once the apartment has been cleaned
