Safer Space Principles
The Safer Space Principles guide the City of Hämeenlinna’s events and promote everyone’s physical, mental, and social safety.
The City of Hämeenlinna wants to strengthen the sense of safety for all residents and participants. Equality and non-discrimination are key objectives for the city, and to promote them, the city follows the Safer Space Principles in all events it organises.
The Safer Space Principles refer to shared practices that promote physical, mental, and social safety. The aim is for everyone to be able to participate without fear of discrimination, bullying, harassment, or violence. The principles also help staff and organisers address difficult situations clearly and consistently.
We speak of a safer space because the experience of safety is always personal. A completely safe space cannot be guaranteed for everyone, but through these principles we commit to acting in a way that makes the space feel as safe as possible for each person. Responsibility for a safer space belongs to all of us.
The Safer Space Principles support everyone’s right to take part and participate as themselves.
The City of Hämeenlinna’s Safer Space Principles:
- We listen to and respect each other’s views and experiences, even when they differ from our own.
- We encourage open and honest interaction.
- We are open to learning from each other and growing as individuals and as a community.
- We follow good manners.
- We exclude no one.
