Hämeenlinna literacy program
Literacy is one of the most essential skills in life. It enables learning, participation in society, and a smooth daily life at all stages of life. Reading also develops the imagination, increases general knowledge, and provides joy, experiences, and new perspectives.
The City of Hämeenlinna wants to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to develop their literacy skills throughout their lives. Therefore, the promotion of literacy is an important part of the city’s operations. The City of Hämeenlinna has drafted a literacy program for the years 2025–2029. The objective of this program is to strengthen the structures of literacy work and increase cooperation between different actors. The program is implemented in cooperation with city services, educational institutions, the Library, cultural operators, associations, and families.
The goal of the literacy program is to increase the joy of reading, support learning and well-being, and ensure that literacy belongs to all residents of Hämeenlinna. The work takes into account residents of different ages, diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and individuals who require special support in developing their literacy skills. The program also promotes the implementation of the National Literacy Strategy 2030 goals in Hämeenlinna.
The literacy program invites all actors to participate in strengthening the culture of reading in Hämeenlinna. Through cooperation, we create opportunities for learning, inclusion, and the development of literacy at different stages of life.
