Morning and afternoon activities

Pupils in the 1st and 2nd grades, as well as pupils from other grades who have a decision on pupil-specific support measures and their arrangement, or who have a disability, illness, or functional limitation affecting their learning ability, can apply for morning and after school activities organised in schools.

Morning and after school activities support a child’s well-being, social skills, and safe leisure time. Activities include, for example, outdoor play, games, crafts, rest, and homework. The activity fee includes guidance, a snack (in the afternoon), materials, and insurance.

Morning and after school activities are organised between 7 AM and 5 PM on school premises, both before and after the school day. If Saturday is a school day, no activities are organised then. An activity group is established at a school if at least seven children have registered during the application period. In Hämeenlinna, morning and after school activities are organised by the city itself and by service providers.

Applying

The application period for morning and after school activities for the school year 2026–2027 was from 18 December 2025 to 28 February 2026.

You can also apply for activities after the application period, but places cannot be guaranteed for all applicants in this case. Applications received after the application period will be processed in order of arrival, and a place may be granted if there is space in the group.

The application for the next school year also applies to pupils who participated in the activities during the past school year and wish to continue next year.

A place in morning and after school activities will be allocated to all applicants who applied during the application period, from the group they applied for, provided the group has been established. Decisions on admission to morning and after school activities will be delivered to the guardian via the Suomi.fi Messages service or, alternatively, by post, by the end of June at the latest.

You can fill out a printable paper application form if you are unable to complete the electronic application. The completed application should be returned by email to laura.waulu(at)hameenlinna.fi or by post to Hämeenlinnan kaupunki, Opetuspalvelut / APIP, Wetterhoffinkatu 2, 13100 Hämeenlinna.

Morning and after school activities are voluntary and subject to a fee for families. A granted place can be cancelled free of charge by 31 July 2026 if the place is no longer needed.

Service need:

  • morning and after school activities €140/month (morning activities €20/month and afternoon activities €120/month)
  • morning activities only €60/month
  • afternoon activities only €120/month

If a child’s service need has been notified in advance as ‘afternoon activities only 10 days/month’, half of the afternoon activities fee will be charged.

A child can only have one service need selected at a time, which will be billed with a single monthly invoice. Guardians cannot be billed separately.

Fees are fixed regardless of the daily amount of use. The full month’s fee is charged for August; any activity days in June are not charged. School holiday periods during the school year are not reimbursed.

You can apply for a fee exemption if your family’s financial or social situation requires it.

The application for morning and after school activities must be submitted before applying for a fee exemption. A fee exemption can be granted at the earliest from the beginning of the month in which the application and its attachments were received. A fee exemption is granted for a maximum of one school year at a time.

During the school year, you can change your child’s morning and after school activities service or cancel the activities using the change/cancellation form. Information about changes and cancellations will also be forwarded to the service provider and will be effective from the following month.

Changes to the service or cancellations cannot be made retrospectively. Failure to use a place will not be interpreted as a cancellation of the place. If a pupil changes schools, the current morning and after school activities place must always be cancelled, and a new application submitted.

There is no need to fill out a cancellation form at the end of the school year.

Morning and after school activity groups follow the recommendation of the Finnish National Agency for Education to keep phones in backpacks or another suitable place during activities.

This is based on an amendment to the Basic Education Act that came into force on 1 August 2025. Read more (in Finnish):

Families participating in afternoon activities are asked annually for feedback on the activities. During the past school year, the service survey was available from 18 December 2025 to 31 January 2026. Based on the feedback received, afternoon activities will be developed to better meet the needs and wishes of families regarding the content of the activities.
