Registration for pupils starting in the 1st grade of basic education in August 2026 has closed. Registration for those starting in August 2027 will open in late winter 2027.
Registration takes place via Wilma, and registration instructions are published annually on the Wilma homepage https://hameenlinna.inschool.fi.
In connection with registration, the guardian logged into Wilma must verify the following information:
information necessary for educational planning (e.g., religious education)
pupil’s name and contact information
information on guardians and next of kin
If you have moved to Hämeenlinna after 1 December 2025:
The school transport decision is made automatically in the spring after the school place is confirmed if the school journey is over 3 km. If the child is not entitled to transport based on the distance, but the journey is dangerous or transport is needed for another reason, you can apply for transport in Wilma between 16 February and 24 April 2026.
Registering for school a year earlier or later
The 1st grade of basic education is started in the year the child turns 7. If guardians wish to postpone the start of school to a year earlier or move it to later than prescribed, they must:
obtain a psychologist’s statement on the matter, which is attached to the application
an application (printable pdf, accessible) to start school a year earlier or later.
Applying for a secondary school place
If the guardian’s request could not be fulfilled when assigning the local school, the guardian may apply for a secondary school place for a pupil starting the 1st grade. Applying for a secondary school place is possible once the local school has been assigned to all pupils in the age group. The secondary application can only be made on paper, as it requires the signatures of both guardians. A secondary application for the 1st grade can be made between 14 and 31 March 2026.
A transport benefit is not granted for a secondary school. If several equal secondary school place applications are pending at the same time, open school places are filled by drawing lots.
Applying for morning and afternoon activities
Morning and afternoon activities are voluntary and subject to a fee. The activities are organized at different schools from 7:00 to 17:00 before and after the school day. The 2026–2027 school year begins on 12 August 2026. An assigned place can be cancelled free of charge by 31 July 2026.
