Swimming instruction in comprehensive schools in Hämeenlinna:
During the 2026–2027 school year, the City of Hämeenlinna is developing swimming instruction in basic education with project funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture. The aim is to strengthen pupils’ swimming skills and water safety, and to improve the quality and equality of instruction in line with national guidelines and the city’s updated curriculum. Hämeenlinnan Liikuntahallit Oy is responsible for the swimming instruction provided under the project.
A swimming instructor from Hämeenlinnan Liikuntahallit takes part in school swimming lessons for all pupils in grades 1–3, for 2 × 45 minutes per school year. The swimming instructor guides the lessons in cooperation with the class teacher.
The swimming instructor also organises and leads separate support groups for pupils who need extra help and encouragement to achieve basic swimming skills. The formation and size of these support groups are assessed on a case-by-case basis, depending on the swimming instructor’s resources and availability.
