Field heap notification

A field heap is an elongated pit dug into a field where manure, other organic fertilizers, or compost for post-maturation is placed and stored until later application to the field. Field heap storage is prohibited in groundwater areas and flood-prone areas.

Field heap notification

Notification must be made in advance to the municipal environmental protection authority regarding the storage of manure in a field heap.

Notification must be made in the following situations:

• when receiving solid manure and organic fertilizer products for storage in a field heap
• when post-maturing compost in a field heap
• when storing solid manure in a field heap due to exceptional circumstances, such as for technical or hygienic reasons

How to proceed

Submit your notification using the form available on the vesi.fi website below. Attach a map as an appendix. Submit the carefully filled in form with attachments to the City of Hämeenlinna Environmental Protection by email at kaupunkirakenne@hameenlinna.fi no later than 14 days before commencing storage.

The notification for the storage of manure and organic fertilizer products is made by the recipient. The notification for manure storage in exceptional situations and compost post-maturation is made by the operator on whose livestock farm the manure is produced.

Notification of deviation from the prohibition period

The application of manure and organic fertilizer products to fields is prohibited from the beginning of November to the end of March. Deviation from the prohibition period is permitted until the end of November in situations where manure could not be utilized as fertilizer on fields during the growing season due to exceptional weather conditions. Notification of deviation from the manure application prohibition period must be made to the municipal environmental protection authority by the end of October.

Background and legislation

The storage of manure in field heaps and deviation from the manure application prohibition period are regulated in Government Decree on Limiting Certain Emissions Originating from Agriculture and Horticulture (1250/2014), Sections 6, 9, and 10.
