Pinella Park and Mahlianpuisto

Stop to admire the cityscapes opening up across Lake Vanajavesi in Pinella Park and Mahlianpuisto.

Pinella Park is one of the oldest surviving park areas in Hämeenlinna. Its origins lie in the extensive park complex established along the shores of Lake Vanajavesi in the 1840s, which framed the city’s eastern entrance. The park still represents the English landscape garden style typical of the era, characterised by winding paths, mature trees and views opening onto the water.

During the 1860s and 1870s, the park was home to the Pinella summer restaurant, a popular gathering place where musical performances were frequently held. Although the restaurant building was destroyed by fire in the 1880s, the area has remained a public park for nearly 200 years. Original lamps from the Viipurintie bridge, which was in use at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, have been moved to the park. These have been restored and re-electrified.

Pinella Park and Mahlianpuisto, located on the other side of Viipurintie, are situated in the historically significant Keinusaari area. Here, 19th-century park history, the old provincial hospital buildings, Hämeenlinna Art Museum and the Verkatehdas Arts & Congress Centre form a unique ensemble right near the city centre. In summer, you can admire the lakeside scenery from the terrace of the summer cafe Cafe & Rent Mahlia, for example.

Location of the parks

Pinella Park is located next to the Hämeenlinna Art Museum, and Mahlianpuisto is situated beside the Viipurintie health centre on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi. The park areas are separated by the Viipurintie bridge.
