Ystävyydenpuisto and Laivarannanpuisto

Built near the former steamboat harbour, Laivarannanpuisto and Ystävyydenpuisto offer outdoor enthusiasts magnificent views over Lake Vanajavesi.

Before the rise of motor traffic in the 1930s, the areas of Laivarannanpuisto and Ystävyydenpuisto were of great importance as a hub for inland waterway traffic, as the steamboat pier was located nearby.

Laivarannanpuisto

Laivarannanpuisto is one of the oldest parks in Hämeenlinna. The planting of the park began in 1889 as part of the city’s effort to create a tree-lined walking route leading from the Vanajavesi bridge to the castle, serving both to beautify the cityscape and provide recreation for residents. Its most famous landmarks include Into Saxelin’s sculpture ‘Herääminen’ (Awakening) and its water basin, which was implemented in the 1960s according to the design of city architect Olavi Sahlberg. The original designer of the park is unknown, and it was renovated to its present appearance in 2009–2010.

Located next to Laivarannanpuisto is the summer restaurant Rantakasino, a guest harbour, and services for boaters. In summer, you can also depart from the shore for an inland waterway cruise. In addition to the stunning lake scenery, the parks feature beautiful floral displays.

Ystävyydenpuisto

Ystävyydenpuisto is situated on land that originally belonged to the private gardens of the woollen mill owner Amberla and the pharmacist’s widow Fernelius. The park received its name and special character in 1973, when representatives of Hämeenlinna’s twin cities planted their own namesake trees in the area. These trees form a characteristic arc around the central square and fountains. Ystävyydenpuisto represents 1970s park design and was renovated to its current form in 2010–2011. The pier running along the shore was completed in 2012. The park also features a playground.

Location of the parks

Ystävyydenpuisto and Laivarannanpuisto are located on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi, along Arvi Kariston katu. The Viipurintie bridge separates the two parks.
